Bettycute4.jpg

Although Betty’s first musical instrument was the accordion her mother bought from a door-to-door salesman, the banjo is her true love. She began serious study of the banjo while her children were small. Her sons grew up believing all moms played the banjo. Betty has played in folk groups and bands, accompanied choirs and stage productions, anywhere the sound of the banjo is needed – which, of course, is everywhere!!!

Candice Kempton plays the fiddle, mandolin, guitar, piano, and hammered dulcimer. Music is one of her greatest loves, and she feels very lucky to have found such great friends to play with. Whenever possible, she loves spending time with her children and grandchildren. She currently works at the Book Table as the music department manager.

Dancing ever since she could walk and picking up the violin at the age of four, Kristen Day comes from a a background immersed in the arts. Graduate of Violin Performance and Pedagogy at BYU she uses her experience to teach others the joy of music through private violin instruction and a parent-toddler music class. It is only recently she has made folk and bluegrass a continuation of her studies. Performing with Sassafras has enabled her to renew her creative energy and share her love of the fiddle. When she’s not fiddlin’, her husband (who, by the way, she met at a bluegrass party) and her three adorable children keep her busy.

Genetcute4.jpg

Genet is the redundant misfit of the group. She always wears clothes that don’t match the others, gets car sick on road trips and didn’t recognize her own Aunt when she was in the audience. But her awesome bass playing, beautiful voice and fun personality make her irreplaceable in the group. She has 3 ½ basses at home, (husband Shane, teenage son Zach, her bass fiddle Isabella, and the aspiring bass, her youngest son Landon.) Genet also plays the piano, organ, clarinet and dulcimer, but playing with her basses is her passion!

Marianne uses performing as therapy, playing her guitar and singing is much cheaper and more fun! She also plays folk fife, dulcimer and likes to pick up other random instruments just because. Her "real" job is Executive Director of Summerfest Arts Faire and music specialist for Utah Festival Opera's Education Program. She especially loves hanging out with her husband and four children.
